It's Lilac Time!

Just like last year, my beautiful French lilacs are blooming which makes me very happy.  I have about double the amount I had last year, and they seem to be a bit more fragrant this year.

And just to update you on my faux brick wall, as you can see, it's still going strong!  I've changed the knobs on the dresser to black, got a new round mirror for over the bench, and painted the mirror on the dresser black.

My Mother's Day Gift to Myself

When you're grocery shopping a few days before Mother's Day and you happen upon THE most amazing purple hydrangeas you've ever seen in your life, YOU BUY THEM!!!  Can you believe how dark these are?  Wow...thank you Superstore!

And then I found the cutest baskets...above is from HomeSense and the cute one below I scored at Dollarama...because every potted Hydrangea needs a basket!

Adding Some Green

Just a quick post to show you how I've been adding some life and some green to my space.  Ever since my little break to the tropics, I've been adding tropical plants to my interior.   Although I love gardening, I've never really had much luck with indoor plants.  Most of these I picked up from Home Depot a few months ago, and I'm happy to say they're all still living!!!

I even added two faux fiddle leaf trees from Michael's to the dining room.  Other years I've brought my ferns inside in the Fall (which usually die after a couple of months), so I decided to try faux, and I love them!!!

(All photos are mine taken with my iPhone.)

Can't wait to take some of these outside soon...it's finally starting to warm up here, and I've just started to plant my annuals.  Changing things up a bit outside, so will have some updates for you soon.
Have a great week!

PS I've had some trouble with my computer over the last couple of months, so my posts haven't been as frequent.  Thanks for sticking with me!!!

Making a Spring Bouquet

My love for flowers continues... I thought I'd try another vessel arrangement using the same vase I used in this one.  This time I just bought some grocery store greens mixed with pink tulips and carnations.

It's pretty easy if you want to try it.  Layer in your greens first...it should look pretty good with just the greens... and then it's best if you fill in all the spaces with clusters of the same flower.  The key is not to be afraid.. just try it!

This is the other side...a totally different look.

Mine looked very dramatic and abstract at first and then by the next day, as the flowers grew (tulips grow once they are cut) and fell, it became more whimsical.

Canadian Tire Canvas Spring/Summer 2017 Preview

Now that it's starting to warm up here (and the six inches of snow that fell a couple of weeks ago has melted), we're all thinking about the backyard and patio.  I was recently invited to a Canadian Tire event, showcasing their 2017 CANVAS Spring/Summer collection #mycanvasstyle.  The venue was set up using all their CANVAS merchandise including interior and exterior items. I must say, I was very impressed with the outdoor lanterns & chandeliers...and here's a bonus, some are even solar!
Here's a little peek at what I saw.

See what I mean by their outdoor lighting?  The  Cassara Lantern is one of my favourite.  As a gardener, I'm always looking for new planters and sometimes it's hard to find great style at an affordable price. I'm loving this & this...from CANVAS.

How cute are these inflatables for the pool?

The Hippest Co-op Office Space in Toronto

For over a year now my husband has been officing out of the coolest creative space in Toronto... East Room.  This place is an eclectic industrial mix that is done to perfection!  When you combine black steel doors & windows, exposed beams & pipes, 20 foot ceilings and white brick walls & then you add a mix of mid century, modern & industrial antiques... you get an absolutely spectacular space!
(I want to move in....really, I could live here!)

This old factory was stripped back to its bones by the owners--brothers Derreck Martin (the owner of 507 Antiques) & Sam Martin, to make it feel like New York. It is set up more like a lounge in the common spaces and then as you venture down the hallways, there are offices & boardrooms...well equipped to accommodate all your office needs.   If you are a creative in Toronto & looking for a space to office out of without the huge overhead, I strongly recommend this place.

Floral Workshop at Wild North Flowers

A few weeks ago I did something I've always wanted to do...I had a quick lesson in flower arranging!  As most of you know, I. LOVE. FLOWERS., & take frequent pics of them like here, here & here.   (It's also been five very long months since I've seen my garden, & I'm having major withdrawals.)  A  dream of mine has been to do this & it's definitely on my bucket list, but until then, I have to start small.  When I saw that a local flower shop, Wild North Flowers, was offering a workshop I thought...sign me up!   This was such a fun night, &  it happened to be just before Valentine's day so this was a gift from my hubby.

We were all given an urn that was filled with a ball of chicken wire & water & also was taped at the top with a grid for easier arranging.  You might be asking, like I did, where the heck do you get chicken wire?  Apparently it's at....Canadian Tire!   (You can learn so much from this blog. haha)  The first thing we did was choose our greens.

One thing I learned was that the arrangement should look good with just the greens...before any flowers have been added.  I actually love this look.  Apparently with green being the Pantone colour of the year, the trend for many brides is to just do the greenery in their bouquets & arrangements.  I think this is stunning & very dramatic especially with the backdrop of white in a winter wedding.

After we were finished with the greenery we chose our flowers.  So for whatever reason, my fave colours in the garden & in a bouquet are purples, pinks & whites,  (I do not do reds, oranges or yellows...I know, interesting psychology...there are people out there that only do the reds, oranges & yellows...I've met them at the garden centres.  Hey, we are all different, right?)  Most of the flowers hadn't opened up yet because you want them to open up gradually & to last longer.

The tricky thing about doing a vessel floral arrangement is that it has to look good from all sides...no pressure...hence the turn table.  Just when it started to look good from one side I would turn it & it wasn't happening on the other side.  Fortunately, there was an instructor there to help at all times & to guide us through the process.

Another very cool thing that happened at this workshop was that I got to meet another blogger, sweet Kaylee from The Blondielocks .  These workshops are open to individuals or groups if you like...perfect for wedding parties, mother & daughter(s), birthday parties or just friends wanting a creative night out.  I had such a fun time & highly recommend this!

So here's the finished bouquet...I'm a little embarrassed to show it cuz it is my first attempt but here it is.

Have a great weekend, & please let me know if any of you sign up for this!

Dominican Republic Part II: Gardens & Excursion #exploretransat

As promised in my previous post, here's Part II of my trip to Dominican.  If I wasn't by the pool or at the beach, you could find me wandering the winding pathways & exploring the beautifully kept gardens.

We also did a one-day excursion from La Romana to Altos de Chavon which is a replica of a 16th century village.  Our day happened to be a rainy one (yes we had one day of rain) so not the best pics...but still quite a beautiful place to visit.  (Apparently, Michael Jackson & Lisa Marie Presley were married here...who knew?)

And of course I had to take  a pic of the door...clearly I have a thing for doors

I also tried snorkeling on our excursion for the first time ever...it was a little scary...but I did it!  I got to see the coral reef & a black & white striped fish...very cool!

Here's a little peek into my room...I had a room to myself for a whoooole week...every mom's dream. haha

And that's my trip in a nutshell.  Had such an amazing time &  would highly recommend a trip to Dominican Republic!   Transat really made everything easy...with friendly staff...always willing to assist.

And now that I've been home for almost two weeks in the cold & the snow
it all just seems like a dream...but a beautiful dream!
